Ghent or Antwerp, Belgium (Remote working is possible with occasional office visit)

Our client is looking for a senior software engineer / system architect to take up a (co-)leading role in the development of its "smart data platform", and other highly scalable data ingestion, storage, analysis and publication platforms using state of the art big data technologies.


The assignment

  • System Architect: you take a central role in the translation of complex (even ambiguous) system requirements (sometimes cross-cutting multiple projects) to achievable roadmaps and implementable architectural specifications;
  • Senior Software Engineer: you enjoy taking part in the implementation effort (i.e. programming) but take care to avoid that it becomes a one-(wo)man-show;
  • Team-centric mentality: you recognize that software engineering is a team sport, you build bridges (rather than walls) between people with respect for their capabilities and needs, you enjoy coaching others as a core aspect of your job (as opposed to a distraction);
  • Knowledge building: you see technical and domain knowledge as a resource that must be shared, not just through written documentation but also through verbal interactions, and you are able to tune the message to the intended audience;
  • Pragmatism: you strive for quality but also realize that a good solution that is on time (even roughly) is always better than a perfect solution that is never quite ready.


Required knowledge and skills

  • ~10y (or more) of experience in enterprise-grade software engineering;
  • Extensive experience with Scala, Java (and/or Kotlin) in back-end scenarios;
  • Experience with the Apache big data stack (Spark, Hadoop, Hudi) and/or the Acca toolkit;
  • Familiar with patterns such as CQRS, Event sourcing, Sharding, etc.;
  • Familiar with architectural tools & frameworks such as UML, Archimate & TOGAF.
  • Strong written & verbal communication skills (not limited to purely technical subjects);
  • Professional level of English (both written as verbal)


Nice to have

  • Knowledge of Dutch;
  • Experience with JavaScript/TypeScript and/or Python;
  • Experience with Semantic Web technology;
  • Experience with data governance, data catalog & data lake(house) technology.
