Relocating for a new role can be an exhilarating, yet daunting experience. The decisions you make and how you execute them can have many consequences. However, relocating shouldn’t be seen in a negative light, its often a fantastic opportunity to earn more money, obtain experience that may not be available in other locations and can place you in more exciting areas of your industry. Here, we provide our tips to ensure success in your new career move.
Before committing to a role that requires you to relocate, write down why you think it’s the right choice for you. Will it provide more job satisfaction? More money? Is it a step up in responsibility? When considering the positives, consider the potential negatives too. Will your family transfer with you? How will you cope with detachment from friends? Are there any language or cultural barriers to consider? By finding some clarity on your ‘why’, you’ll be better equipped to solve any issues the move presents and have an idea on how to handle them.
Familiarise yourself with your new home
Try to experience as much as you can before committing to your new home, if possible, visit a few times and see if you can imagine yourself living there. Places are not always as they seem in pictures and videos, so make an effort to go and feel out the area for yourself. Enquire with your employer as to whether anybody else previously has relocated to that area in the past. If there is, how did they find the move?
Don’t make the mistake of turning up on the first day, with the hope that everything falls into place and runs smoothly. Proper research in the lead up to your start date will put your mind at ease and will lessen the stress you experience. Speak to current employees in a similar role within the company for advice and information, find out company procedures, and you could even enquire if the company can help your relocation in any way.
A new start
Remember that you have a life after work. You need to be able to unwind and relax after your shifts, network with people at your new place of work and with people in your area. Joining social clubs or sports teams is a great way to meet new people, helping you to settle into your new home.
Are things not working out?
If things haven’t quite began the way you envisioned, don’t panic! Any significant life change can initially feel alien. Give yourself some time to adjust, to make new friends and get settled into your new role. You’ll often find that without realising, you feel gradually more comfortable and your new location will start to feel like home.
